Contemporary Vimalakirti — Master Zhang Bu Sheng
Contemporary Vimalakirti — Master Zhang Bu Sheng
Master Zhang Bu Sheng, a national treasure-level cultural and educational master of Singapore, is widely regarded as the “Contemporary Vimalakirti.”
His thought is vast and profound, integrating the wisdom of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, Eastern cultivation systems, and Western spiritual exploration. Through decades of dedicated practice, he has continuously verified and synthesized diverse methodologies, guiding the path of cultivation from fragmentation to unity, and from theoretical knowledge to direct realization.
Most crucially, his realization and application of the “Non-Dual Dharma Gate” lies at the very core of all his teachings and endeavors.
The Way of Vimalakirti is the Way of Non-Duality—transcending all oppositions: the secular and the sacred, the East and the West, science and religion.
Over more than forty years of seeking the Dharma, Master Zhang has integrated the inner sage traditions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism; penetrated the lineages of Tibetan Buddhism including Nyingma, Kagyu, and Gelug; and deeply explored the spiritual teachings of Jesus as well as the wisdom of ancient Egyptian civilization. What he has pursued and realized is not a mere accumulation of multiple systems, but a direct recognition of the unified source—all phenomena return to One, and One contains all.
He is deeply aligned with the path revealed in the Mahayana scripture, the Vimalakirti Sutra: to walk the Bodhisattva path as a lay practitioner, to act within the world without being defiled by it, and to manifest the Non-Dual Dharma Gate within real life—achieving the unity of self-awakening and awakening others.
Master Zhang does not withdraw from the world in pursuit of enlightenment, nor does he abandon sentient beings in walking the Great Path. For decades, grounded in this realization, he has transcended sectarian boundaries and formal limitations, reconstructing ancient wisdom through modern language so that profound teachings return to everyday life:
He brings “turning a single thought into Bodhi” into each moment of daily awareness;
He integrates “non-discriminative compassion” into family and social relationships;
He makes awakening a capacity that can be learned, practiced, and verified by all.
Just as Vimalakirti demonstrated non-duality through silence, Master Zhang manifests truth through continuous action in real life.
On Self-Awakening (自觉)
He advocates returning to one’s original mind, using awareness to illuminate the nature of afflictions, and integrating cultivation into real life—enabling individuals to awaken inner purity and wisdom through emotions, relationships, and life experiences.
On Awakening Others (觉他)
Inheriting Vimalakirti’s spirit of skillful means, he translates profound teachings into systematic, practical growth pathways. He has built life education and healing systems that are replicable and scalable, empowering individuals to reshape their worldview, values, life perspective, and understanding of the universe—benefiting people from all backgrounds.
Master Zhang has initiated the “Global Shambhala Happiness World” project, a USD 100 billion vision to establish happiness communities across 300 cities worldwide. He is committed to building a “Pure Land on Earth” centered on spiritual awakening.
Guided by the principle “When the mind is pure, the land is pure,” he integrates individual awakening with societal development—driving innovation across culture, education, healing, and technology, and exploring a new civilization that harmonizes material and spiritual advancement.
In realizing this vision, Master Zhang utilizes business as a vehicle, founding and developing an international platform with more than thirty branches, forming a cross-regional collaborative network. Over more than a decade, he has built an industry ecosystem worth hundreds of millions of Singapore dollars, transforming cultivation from an individual pursuit into an organized, systematic, and globally scalable movement.
