Mahamayuri Vidyarajni, Mother of the Buddhas, is an emanation of Vairocana Buddha and other cosmic manifestations. This Wisdom King is depicted riding a peacock, with a four-armed form holding four sacred objects. The peacock symbolizes the complete eradication of all afflictions and poisons. The lotus held in the hand represents reverence and love; the fruit of karma signifies subjugation; the auspicious fruit stands for growth and benefit; and the peacock’s tail symbolizes the dispelling of disasters.
Practicing the Mahamayuri Dharma enables one to receive the protection and blessings of the Buddhas, as well as the guardianship of celestial beings and nāgas. It can eliminate both internal and external poisons, dispel evil influences and misfortunes, heal illnesses, prolong life, and increase merit and wisdom. Whatever is sincerely requested will be fulfilled, bringing beings genuine peace and happiness in this life.
On a lotus womb, the Great Peacock Wisdom King Bodhisattva, the Mother of Buddhas, is depicted facing east. She wears a white, light garment, adorned with a crown of jewels, earrings, and armlets, all richly decorated. She rides a golden peacock king, seated in the lotus posture upon either a white lotus or a blue lotus. Her expression embodies compassion. She has four arms: the first right hand holds an open lotus flower; the second right hand holds a fruit of karma (shaped like a papaya); the first left hand, positioned at the heart, holds an auspicious fruit; the second left hand holds a peacock tail with three to five stems. Each of the four objects held in her hands symbolizes one of the Four Dharma teachings: The lotus flower represents great compassion and reverence. The fruit of karma symbolizes subjugation, as it tames the mother and child demons. The auspicious fruit signifies augmentation or increase of strength. The peacock tail, used to sweep away obstacles, symbolizes dispelling disasters. Furthermore, the white lotus seat represents the original vow of compassionate acceptance, while the blue lotus seat symbolizes the meaning of subjugation.
The great and limitless assembly of Dharma protectors
Those who recite this sutra are protected by the Four Great Heavenly Kings, the great Yakshas, the Eight Great Female Spirits, the Seven Great Female Spirits, the Five Great Female Spirits, the Eight Great Rakshasi Women, the Ten Great Rakshasi Women, the Twelve Great Rakshasi Women, the Twelve Heavenly Mothers, the Seventy-three Great Rakshasi Women, and many others. They are also guarded by 177 chief Dragon Kings, the Seven Past Buddhas, Bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha (Earth Store Bodhisattva), Great Brahma King, and Indra King, all of whom protect practitioners through the mantra of the Mother Peacock Wisdom King. In addition, great river gods, mountain kings, the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions, great immortals, medicine gods, and tree spirits all protect sentient beings and their attendants from poisons and harm under the protection of the Great Peacock Wisdom King, Mother of the Buddhas. All calamities are dispelled, allowing longevity up to one hundred years, great power, wealth, and freedom. Moreover, all evil spirits—whether ghosts, non-human entities, or malicious forces—along with all misfortunes, fearful enemies, and various poisons, including curses and hexes, cannot overcome the mighty Mahamayuri, the Mother Peacock Wisdom King. Those who recite this dharani and their families are always kept far from unwholesome karma, blessed with great auspiciousness, supported by all the holy beings, and have all their wishes fulfilled.
This sutra mentions many names of dragons, heavenly beings, ghosts, and spirits, all of which are closely connected to the nation, society, and family. These beings protect the world, the land, and all sentient beings. Therefore, we should seek to understand and cooperate with them, so that the human world may become more peaceful and harmonious; that rich and poor, noble and humble may respect one another, and that humans and animals may mutually benefit and coexist.
Our karma is inherited through our parents’ DNA and carried by our soul (Alaya-vijnana) through reincarnation. These karmic imprints become obstacles that hinder the smooth flow of our lives. By greatly reducing these karmic burdens, our lives become more vibrant and successful! Those who have participated in the previously held “Grand Nine-Mandala Grand Fire Puja of the Mahamayuri Great Peacock Wisdom King” have deeply felt these effects.
The “Great Golden Radiance Mother Buddha Mahamayuri Sutra” is a scripture spoken by the Seven Buddhas preceding Shakyamuni. In the future, when Bodhisattva Maitreya transforms the Saha World into a Pure Land, this great sutra will be taught again. The span of time since the Seven Buddhas is over 120 billion years, while the history of our universe as we know it is only about 14 billion years. This highlights the profound sacredness and immense power of the grand nine altar mandala fire offering based on the “Mahamayuri Mandala of the Seven Buddhas and Eight Bodhisattvas.” At that time, beings from the Ten Dharma Realms—including all saints since the Seven Buddhas, the coming Maitreya Buddha, and all sentient beings from the Six Realms with karmic connections—will gather together in one space-time with us. This will provide tremendous support in purifying causes and eliminating karmic obstacles, greatly helping to eradicate sins accumulated since beginningless eons.
The Importance of Participating in the Dharma Assembly
Participating in a large-scale Dharma assembly that activates the unity of the Ten Dharma Realms and connects you with the sages of the Four Holy Realms—Śrāvakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas—is extremely important. It offers the crucial opportunity to receive their blessings and support. Beings from the Six Realms—Devas, Asuras, Humans, Animals, Hungry Ghosts, and Hell beings—can come together in one space, interact with one another, and resolve karmic debts and resentments accumulated since beginningless time. This is an incredibly rare and precious chance for reconciliation and healing. Truly activating the presence of all Ten Dharma Realms in a single space-time is no easy feat.
Holding the Grand Nine-Mandala Fire Puja Again
This grand-scale Dharma assembly, due to its immense cost, was historically held only within the imperial palace during the Tang Dynasty. Through the collective efforts of our devoted practitioners, we successfully hosted the inaugural “Grand Nine-Mandala Grand Fire Puja of the Mahamayuri Great Peacock Wisdom King 2015” in Singapore, which received widespread acclaim. In response to popular demand, this year we have once again invited the monastic community from Taiwan Kaicheng Branch—Mahamayuri Temple—to conduct the Great Nine-Mandala Fire Puja of the Mahamayuri Great Peacock Wisdom King, along with a grand Dharma assembly for the mutual benefit of the Ten Dharma Realms—both the living and the deceased—including rites for transcendence, blessings, disaster relief, and national peace and security.
